Boomnoten
Notenallergie is een van de meest voorkomende voedselallergieën. Ongeveer één procent van de bevolking vertoont een allergische reactie op noten.
De term ‘noten’ verwijst naar noten die aan bomen groeien en mag niet worden verward met pinda’s (die ondergronds groeien en eigenlijk niet als ‘noot’ worden beschouwd). Niet alle soorten noten hebben dezelfde mate van allergeniciteit. Hazelnootallergieën zijn bijvoorbeeld bijzonder wijdverbreid, terwijl amandelen of kokosnoten vaak beter verdragen worden. Een allergietest geeft inzicht in welke noten wel en niet door de betrokkene geconsumeerd kunnen worden.
Boomnoten moeten volgens EU-richtlijn 2007/68/EG als ingrediënt op verpakkingen worden vermeld omdat ze tot de belangrijkste allergenen behoren. Door kruisbesmetting kunnen noten echter per ongeluk in voedingsmiddelen terechtkomen. De accidentele besmetting kan plaatsvinden in bedrijven die zowel notenvrije voeding verwerken alsook voeding die wel noten bevat. Dit kan zich bijvoorbeeld voordoen tijdens de productie van banketwaren, bakproducten, chocolade, koekjes, graanproducten of ijs. Sommige fabrikanten beschermen zichzelf door hun producten van de volgende disclaimer te voorzien: ‘Kan sporen van noten bevatten.’
Voor mensen met een allergie is het belangrijk om erop te kunnen vertrouwen dat een voedingsproduct werkelijk notenvrij is als dat op het etiket staat vermeld.
